Roots and wings, in that order

Langtang Hall sits on the northern rim of the valley, where the road stops being a road. Eight hundred and ninety students, two hundred and forty of them boarding, arranged into six houses named after the rivers of the Langtang.

The house is the unit that matters. It is where a Grade 6 student is looked after by a Grade 11 one, where the Saturday programme is organised, and where — as every leaver will tell you at length — the cup is won or lost.

From Grade 1 to the leaving year

Four divisions, one house. Students change classrooms and teachers; they do not change house.

Lower School

Small sections, one class teacher, and the first taste of house colours at sports day.

Grades 4–7

Middle School

Subject teaching begins, boarding opens from Grade 5, and every student joins a Saturday activity.

Grades 8–10

Upper School

The SEE years, with house study hours and a senior mentor assigned to every student.

From hill running to bookbinding to the school’s own beekeeping. Every student is in one for the whole year, and every activity presents at the Chaitra assembly.

A campus that runs uphill

The cross-country course climbs four hundred metres and is universally resented. The house that wins it has won the cup more often than not, which nobody thinks is a coincidence.
